If you’ve heard the term antifreeze but are unsure of what exactly it is or how it relates to your car, you’re not alone! Plenty of Winder-area drivers have wondered the same thing, and Phil Hughes Honda is here to help. Our service team has put together a quick guide answering some key questions related to antifreeze:
The terms antifreeze and coolant are often used interchangeably, but they’re not exactly the same – coolant is actually a combination of antifreeze and water, usually 50/50. However, some coolants are more potent – up to 70% antifreeze to 30% water – but they also come with higher price tags.
Both antifreeze and coolant are designed to regulate the temperature of your engine on the Monroe roads. Antifreeze is usually made of either propylene glycol or ethylene glycol. You can usually identify it by its bright green, pink, or orange color (vehicles usually take green antifreeze). Your owner’s manual will tell you exactly what kind of antifreeze to use for your make and model.
Antifreeze regulates the temperature of your engine by circulating throughout the engine via a water pump. It’s stored in your car’s radiator and moves heat away from the engine as it circulates. As the coolant heats up in the engine, it circulates back to the radiator and is cooled by air to remove excess heat. As you drive, this cycle of heating and cooling is happening constantly so your engine continues to run at a safe temperature.
Antifreeze is a critical component of your vehicle’s engine, as it keeps the engine from overheating and keeps the coolant from freezing. Without antifreeze cycling through the engine, the following parts of your engine would be put at serious risk:
If you see steam or smoke coming out from under the hood of your car, or if the hood of your car is hot to the touch, your engine might be overheating due to an antifreeze issue.
