How to Jump-Start a Car

jump starting car

If your vehicle refuses to start, you are likely in need of a jump-start, car battery service, or something of a similar nature. The first option is the most likely, but many in Winder are unfamiliar with how to jump-start a car. Our team can show you the proper way to jump-start a car with ease.

If your battery is frequently in need of a jump-start car service, or your car won’t jump-start at all, turn to our Athens service center for a new battery! Follow our guide below on how to properly jump-start a car, so you can be prepared for anything on the Monroe streets.

The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car

To get started with the proper way to jump-start a car, you will need a set of jumper cables and another vehicle. You can always call a jump-start car service like AAA if you don’t have time to wait for a good samaritan to arrive. Once you have what you need, follow these steps to learn how to properly jump-start a car:

  1. Have the car with the healthy battery park facing the vehicle with the dead battery. Then make sure the vehicle is turned off, also double check that both parking brakes are engaged.
  2. Open both hoods and find the batteries. You may need to remove a plastic casing to expose the battery terminals.
  3. Identify both the positive and negative terminals, and be sure they are free of any corrosion.
  4. Connect the red clamp to the positive post of the dead battery.
  5. Hook the second red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery with the charge.
  6. Connect the black clamp to the negative post of the charged battery.
  7. With the last clamp, connect it to an unpainted metal surface on the car’s frame.
  8. Once all of the clamps are connected properly, start the engine of the vehicle with the charged battery, then start the one with the dead battery.
  9. After the jump is complete, carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order of how they were placed on, then shut off the car that was used to help with the jump-start.
  10. Keep the engine running on the newly-jumped vehicle for at least 10 minutes to ensure that the weak battery doesn’t die right away. Your owner’s manual will have more information on specific times.

More Battery Tips and Tricks

When your car won’t jump-start, that is often an indication that you need a battery replacement. However, it can also be a sign of a more serious problem. Follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. If you hear a clicking sound when you try to start your car, the starter may not be functioning properly. Our team can quickly provide a replacement to get you back on the streets in no time.
  2. If the electrical systems of your car turn on, but the engine fails to turn over, there could be a number of issues going on under the hood. The ignition switch, battery, starter, or a fuse could be the culprit. If this scenario sounds familiar, you should bring your vehicle to Phil Hughes Honda for service right away.
  3. If you are able to jump your car, allow it to run for a while. This will enable the battery to recharge fully.
